Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Dario Amodei, CEO and Co-founder of leading AI safety and research firm Anthropic, to discuss India’s growing role in shaping the global landscape of ethical and responsible artificial intelligence. The meeting, held in New Delhi, comes as Anthropic prepares to open its first Indian office in Bengaluru in 2026, marking a major step in its Asia-Pacific expansion.

During their discussion, Prime Minister Modi and Dario Amodei explored ways to ensure that artificial intelligence is developed and deployed responsibly, focusing on ethical governance, inclusivity, and social impact. The Prime Minister emphasized India’s commitment to human-centric AI innovation, highlighting the country’s vibrant tech ecosystem and its talented youth as key drivers of growth.

“India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth are driving AI innovation that is human-centric and responsible. We welcome Anthropic’s expansion and look forward to working together to harness AI for growth across key sectors,” PM Modi said after the meeting.

Anthropic, which has emerged as a major player in the global AI space with its advanced chatbot Claude, announced plans to open its Bengaluru office in early 2026. The new office will focus on hiring local talent and collaborating with Indian organizations, including startups, businesses, and nonprofits, to build socially responsible AI applications.

“Bengaluru will serve as our second office in Asia-Pacific after Tokyo. This expansion will help us serve India’s rapidly growing AI ecosystem and reflects the international demand for Claude,” said Amodei.

He added that India’s massive pool of technical talent and the government’s strong push for inclusive AI development make it one of the most exciting regions for AI innovation. “India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just concentrated pockets,” he said.

Anthropic also announced plans to strengthen its support for Indic languages through its AI models. The company’s AI assistant, Claude, already supports major Indian languages and will soon roll out enhanced performance in Hindi and nearly a dozen others, including Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu.

Amodei emphasized that language inclusion is central to Anthropic’s mission in India. “Building robust support for the languages and contexts that matter most to users in India will be a cornerstone of our work in the region,” he said. “India’s AI ecosystem will play a central role in how AI develops globally and democratically, and we’re looking forward to working with organizations here to pave a path for how beneficial AI can be scaled in a way that serves everyone.”

Anthropic’s expansion aligns with India’s vision to become a global leader in AI-driven innovation. The partnership is expected to boost AI adoption across critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture, helping deliver smarter, scalable, and more inclusive solutions for over a billion people.

Anthropic’s CEO shared that usage of the company’s coding assistant, Claude Code, has grown fivefold in India since June 2025, underscoring the country’s rapid AI adoption and growing developer community.

With global AI giants like OpenAI, Google’s Gemini, and Perplexity AI already expanding in India, Anthropic’s entry reinforces the country’s emergence as a key hub for next-generation AI development.

The meeting between PM Modi and Dario Amodei symbolizes a shared vision — one where technology serves humanity responsibly, and innovation is guided by ethics and inclusion. As India continues to balance progress with principles, its collaboration with leading AI firms like Anthropic could shape the global conversation on responsible, accessible, and multilingual artificial intelligence.
