At just 15 years old, Sydney-based multi-hyphenate Jourdan Evans is proving that longevity in the entertainment industry requires both passion and profound dedication. From staging childhood “Light Shows” at home to performing in front of stadium crowds of 17,000, Evans has rapidly transitioned from a theatre prodigy to a compelling recording artist and storyteller.
In this exclusive conversation with About Insider, the American-born performer opens up about the discipline and personal sacrifices behind his early success, his deep respect for industry craft, and the creative vision driving his new cinematic project—a thoughtful reinterpretation of Elvis Presley’s classic, “Suspicious Minds,” aimed at helping today’s youth feel less alone.
Welcome to About Insider, Jourdan Evans! It’s a pleasure to have you with us. For our readers meeting you for the first time, could you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your journey into music, acting, and storytelling?
Well, thank you for having me! My name is Jourdan Evans. I’m a 15-year-old performer currently living in Sydney. However, I was born in the USA and spent the first six years of my life in Toronto. I first found my love for the performing arts when I was around five or six years old and went to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats the Musical”. It just really sparked a dream in my head. After seeing that show (many times), I became inspired to create full productions at home every weekend. I created all the lighting, sound, costumes, props, merchandise the whole thing. I even had a special name for them. They were called “Light Shows.”
This went on for many years at home, much to the endless patience of my poor family, who had to watch me perform. Looking back now, I think it also showed my love for every part of entertainment, not just being on stage, but everything that goes on behind the scenes too. I loved all the creative elements that bring a show to life.
When my parents realized that my passion for this was very real, they connected me with my first agent, and I booked my first professional musical within six months. From there, the story really continued. I eventually found my way into the music world and discovered a love for recording music, creating projects, and becoming a recording artist. My parents were also happy to get their weekends back!!
At just 15 years old, you’ve already performed on theatre stages, at major music festivals, and in front of stadium crowds. What has this journey been like, and what keeps you motivated to keep growing?
Yes, I’ve had this incredible journey, and I am very grateful for everything I have done so far in my career. But at the same time, the journey to be honest has at times been really hard. I’ve had to make quite a few sacrifices, particularly when it comes to my social life and friendships. Many of the normal things you get to do as a kid or teenager, I’ve had to give up. But, I knew these sacrifices had to be made and I was happy to make them simply because I love performing so much and I really want this to be my life.
Your new single, Suspicious Minds, is much more than a cover of an Elvis Presley classic. What inspired you to reinterpret this iconic song, and why did you choose it for this project?
The inspiration really was my dad, who used to play Elvis songs in the car. I’ve grown up with a massive respect for Elvis as an artist and have realized that his music is timeless and universal. For me , that made Suspicious Minds the perfect song to tell this story through. It’s such an iconic song that has connected with people across generations, cultures, and backgrounds for so many years. Suspicious Minds has the ability to be interpreted in so many different ways and at so many different stages of life and because it is loved by so many people, I felt it was a great way of telling a story that could connect with kids my age.
The music video explores themes like friendship, trust, misunderstandings, and fear, topics many young people experience today. Why was it important for you to tell this story, and what message do you hope viewers take away from it?
In many cases, I feel that kids and teens around the world experience the same or similar thoughts, emotions, and difficulties. What was really important to me was making people my age feel like what they’re going through isn’t only unique to them and to help normalize those feelings. Using film and music together allowed me to tell a story that other young people could see themselves in and hopefully make them feel a little less alone.
You’ve said that you’re discovering a love for creating, not just performing. How has stepping into the roles of creator and storyteller changed the way you approach your music and future projects?
It’s been shown to me over the past few years by many people that the role of storytelling is extremely important for any artist in the industry. If you can’t tell a story, then you can’t connect with an audience. I’ve also learned that it’s really important to have knowledge of all areas, not just one side of the industry. The more I’ve learned, the more input I’ve been able to have and the more respect I’ve gained for the people working in this business. Every area is incredibly important to understand for anyone who wants longevity in the industry.
You’ve already shared the stage with well-known artists and recently performed in front of more than 17,000 people. Is there a performance that has had the biggest impact on you so far, and why?
The performance that has had the biggest impact on me so far is probably my most recent musical theatre production, City of Angels. It was a very sophisticated script. The subtext was difficult, and the way the music was written was also very challenging. I learned just how much time you need to spend researching every aspect of your character and the script before you can truly step into the role, make it your own, and deliver the most authentic performance. Particularly when it’s a script that was written a long time ago and comes from a completely different era, research is key.
Elvis Presley’s music continues to inspire generations. What do you think makes his songs timeless, and how do you balance honoring his legacy while adding your own artistic identity?
For me how I see it, Elvis’s music has lasted because it was honest. He wasn’t afraid to put real emotion into his performances, and people still connect with that today. That’s probably the biggest lesson I’ve taken from him. No matter what style of music I’m singing, I want people to believe and feel what I’m performing. As far as honoring his legacy I think it’s about staying true to the heart and emotion of the song, while also telling a story that felt personal to me and relevant to young people today.
Many young people dream of pursuing a career in music, acting, or filmmaking. Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to aspiring artists who want to turn their passion into a profession?
Probably the biggest piece of advice I would give is that it’s all about hard work there a no short cuts not if you want to last a long time in the industry. If you’re in a room with a hundred people, you must be the hardest-working person in that room, in every situation, every time you turn up, and every single day. You also need to be adaptable, be a good person, and have humility and kindness. You need to show respect to the people around you and to others in the industry. Because sometimes it doesn’t matter how talented you are; and remember that whole room is full of talent, so you also have to be someone people want to work with, talent alone is not enough.
Looking ahead, what can fans expect from Jourdan Evans? Can you tell us about your upcoming cinematic music projects, original music, and the goals you’re working towards over the next few years?
What can you expect from Jourdan? Well, you can expect a lot. You can expect a lot of original music, and you can expect to hear and see things that I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about and that are really true to who I am.
I really want to bring a lot of those ideas to life not just through music, but through film and stage as well. I’d love to adapt one of my original songs into a short film. Constantly creating and learning the full picture of this industry is really important to me.
I do of course have some really exciting things coming up both locally and internationally. So, stay tuned for some big things !!!
