A recent study by the Centre for Law and Policy Research has revealed that only 14%-17% of judges in the Karnataka High Court are women, highlighting the gender disparity in the judiciary. The study also found that Andhra Pradesh, Bombay, and Calcutta High Courts have a similar gender composition.
At the national level, the representation of women in the Supreme Court remains low, with only 6.25% (two out of 32 judges) currently being women. Historically, the ratio has been even lower, standing at just 3.95% over time.
The findings raise concerns about gender diversity in the Indian judiciary, emphasizing the need for greater inclusion and equal opportunities for women in higher courts. Increasing representation could lead to a more balanced and equitable justice system.
