Why Turkey Is Facing a Boycott from Indian Businesses and Animal Activists

Indian grocery shops and online fashion retailers are taking a strong stand by boycotting Turkish products after growing anger over Turkey’s political support for Pakistan. This movement started after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan publicly backed Pakistan following India’s military actions in Kashmir.

Major Indian companies are now pulling Turkish items off their shelves. Products like chocolates, coffee, jams, biscuits, cosmetics, and clothing from Turkish brands are being removed. The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF), which represents 13 million small stores, announced an indefinite boycott of Turkish goods. Fashion websites like Myntra and AJIO have also removed popular Turkish clothing brands, including LC Waikiki, Koton, and Trendyol, citing national sentiment as a reason.

This boycott, while not officially mandated by the Indian government, could significantly impact trade. India imports over $2.7 billion worth of goods from Turkey every year, including food, clothing, and minerals. The food product ban alone could affect about ₹2,000 crore ($234 million) worth of trade.

Many Indians have also cancelled their travel plans to Turkey, and companies like Flipkart have suspended flight and hotel bookings to the country in support of India’s national interests. Additionally, Turkish firms operating in India are facing restrictions, including the cancellation of security clearance for Turkish aviation services.

Beyond political and economic concerns, Turkey is also under global scrutiny for its treatment of stray animals. The country has been criticised for laws that allow the killing of stray dogs, sparking outrage among animal lovers worldwide. Many believe these actions are cruel and inhumane.

As India boycotts Turkish goods for political reasons, animal lovers around the world are being urged to join the movement—not just in solidarity with India but to advocate for the rights of stray animals. Choosing to avoid Turkish products sends a clear message: there is no place for cruelty, whether toward people or animals.

Every animal lover can make a difference by refusing to support a country that allows the mistreatment and killing of voiceless creatures. It’s time to take a stand for justice, compassion, and humanity.
