Walmart has picked one of its own to guide the company forward. John Furner, who has spent many years at Walmart, will become the next CEO, following Doug McMillon. At 51, Furner brings years of experience, strong family connections to the company, and a personal story that matches Walmart’s culture and values.
John Furner grew up in Arkansas, where Walmart is based. His father, Steve Furner, spent most of his career with the company, helping open stores in the 1980s and 1990s, when Walmart became America’s largest retailer. As a result, John spent his childhood surrounded by Walmart.
His bond with the company grew stronger during his teenage years. In the late 1980s, after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, Walmart employees raised about $37,000 to help with her treatment. Company founder Sam Walton also made sure the family had what they needed. Although John’s mother passed away in 1989, this act of kindness stayed with him for life.
John’s first job at Walmart was a part-time position at a store in Bentonville while he was in college. He later studied marketing management at the University of Arkansas. What kept him at the company were the people, including the associates he worked with and the customers he served.
He got his big career break with a summer internship at Sam’s Club Mexico. This international experience showed him Walmart’s global reach and gave him ideas he later used in the U.S. Over the years, he moved into larger roles and eventually became the head of Walmart U.S. just before the Covid-19 pandemic started.
Furner is known as a skilled retail leader, but he also has interests outside of work. He enjoys cycling and playing the guitar. His colleagues say he is thoughtful, down-to-earth, and closely connected to Walmart’s employee-focused culture.
What His Appointment Means
John Furner’s journey from part-time associate to CEO demonstrates Walmart’s commitment to promoting from within. Having spent almost his whole career at the company, he knows Walmart’s size, its customers, and its people very well.
As the new CEO, he takes on one of the most important jobs in global retail. He brings experience, humility, and a strong connection to the company’s roots.
