At 15 years old, Tyler Jay Ablan Reyes is already rising to the top of Filipino basketball, thanks to his impressive versatility and skills on the court. Playing as a forward for De La Salle Zobel High School, Tyler’s combination of athleticism, tactical intelligence, and basketball instincts have turned him into a hot prospect, drawing the attention of coaches and scouts across the Philippines. For a young athlete with a deeply-rooted passion for basketball, Tyler’s journey has been greatly impacted by both his family’s sports legacy and his own commitment to the game.

Born in Pasig City and raised in Muntinlupa City, Tyler comes from a family steeped in athletic achievement. His father, Jayr Reyes, was a celebrated center for the UP Fighting Maroons and played professionally in the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association). His mother, Jen Ablan-Reyes, was also an accomplished athlete, playing volleyball for the University of the Philippines. Growing up in this environment, Tyler was surrounded by the sights, sounds, and discipline of competitive sports, which furthered his desire to pursue his own athletic dreams.

Tyler’s interest in basketball began around age 7. Though he dabbled in sports under the influence of his father’s career, his true passion for basketball solidified post-COVID-19 in 2022, when he decided to train with more serious intent. Standing at 6’8’’, his height naturally set him up to play as a center, but Tyler’s agility and skill make him an ideal forward – especially in today’s game, where versatility is a prized asset. Unlike many players of his stature who stick to the post, Tyler has expanded his game to include a reliable mid-range jumper and a developing three-point shot, making him a threat across the court.

On defense, Tyler’s strength truly shines. His ability to read plays, track opponents, and help defend in crucial moments makes him valuable to his team. He is a tenacious rebounder and understands the importance of positioning, often boxing out opponents with skill beyond his years. Tyler’s fundamentals – footwork, passing, and post-play – are polished, reflecting the disciplined approach he brings to his game. His offensive skills have also grown tremendously; developing his mid-range and perimeter shooting allows him to stretch the floor, which is rare for a player of his size. These skills have been on full display as he competes in prestigious local leagues such as the Junior Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (JrMPBL), the University of the Philippines Athletic Association (UAAP) Juniors Division, and the United Basketball League (UBL). Additionally, he has tested his talents in tournaments like the City Hoops Tournament 18U, the Philippine Athletic Youth Association (PAYA) 16U, and the PRISAA 3×3 U17 tournament. These experiences have given Tyler the confidence to play under pressure and improve his skills against other top youth players in the Philippines.

More recently, his basketball ambitions have taken him beyond the local stage to international arenas. Last year, Tyler represented the Philippines at the International Youth Basketball Championship (IYBC) in Thailand, competing with and against promising young athletes from across Asia. He was also selected for the Arizona Select Basketball (UA Circuit Future 14U) in the United States, where he had the chance to compete in one of the world’s most basketball-obsessed countries. Now, Tyler is spending time in the U.S. to perfect his mobility and shooting mechanics. Training under Dante Harlan, founder of the renowned 3rd Eye Academy, Tyler is fine-tuning his dribbling skills and consistency, making him a well-rounded offensive player. Tyler is also working with Christopher “CT” Thomas, founder of 1 World Dominator and a coach who has mentored legends like Kobe Bryant. CT’s focus on the importance of detail to the development of an athlete has been instrumental in Tyler’s journey, influencing both his physical game and his mental resilience.

Despite his young age, Tyler is aware of the challenges and demands that come with pursuing basketball at an elite level. His participation in the National Team Training Pool for 2023 and 2024 is a reflection of his skills and a preview of the possibilities that lie ahead. Representing his country has ignited a sense of pride and responsibility in him, pushing him to become a stronger, more resilient player and individual. With each game and training session, Tyler builds on his family’s legacy and aims to make his own mark in Filipino basketball.

Tyler Reyes checks all the boxes: versatility, athleticism, and basketball IQ. His story of personal ambition is unfolding before our eyes, and with him, he brings the hopes of his family, his coaches, and the people who have followed along on his journey. The future is bright for Tyler, and Filipino basketball fans everywhere are watching to see what’s next.
