The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a strict attendance mandate for the upcoming 2025 Class 10 and 12 board exams. In an official notice addressed to Principals and Heads of Schools, the board emphasized that all affiliated schools must comply with Rules 13 and 14 of the CBSE Examination Bye-Laws. These rules dictate that students must have a minimum of 75% attendance to be eligible to sit for their board examinations.
CBSE highlighted that schools play a crucial role beyond academic learning, contributing to students’ holistic development. In addition to core subjects, schools provide an environment where students engage in extracurricular activities, peer interaction, and character building and learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, diversity, and inclusion. According to the board, regular attendance is essential for students to benefit from these opportunities fully.
“It is well understood that schools are not just centers for academic learning but play a critical role in the overall development of students,” CBSE stated. “Regular attendance is vital to ensuring their holistic development.”
How much attendance is required in Class 10 CBSE?
To maintain eligibility for the board exams, students must meet the 75% attendance requirement throughout the academic year. However, CBSE offers some flexibility for students facing special circumstances. The board allows a 25% relaxation in medical emergencies, participation in national or international sports events, or other serious reasons, provided the necessary documentation is submitted.
While this exemption provides relief for certain students, CBSE has made it clear that schools must ensure transparency and adherence to this rule. Schools are instructed to inform students and parents about the attendance requirement and its potential consequences.
Attendance required in Class 12 CBSE?
Failure to meet the 75% attendance rule can result in students being barred from appearing in their board exams. The board has emphasized that during random inspections, if it is found that students are absent without valid leave records, those students will be presumed to have irregular attendance and could be disqualified from the exams. Once attendance records are submitted to CBSE, no changes will be allowed, and the final calculation of attendance will be made as of January 1 of the academic session.
Along with the attendance directive, CBSE has issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for handling cases where students fall short of the attendance requirement. Schools must follow these procedures when applying for condonation and must use the provided Proforma for submitting such cases.
As the 2025 board exams approach, students are encouraged to stay committed to their studies and attendance, ensuring they meet all eligibility criteria to achieve success in their board exams.
For schools, the notice is a call to monitor student attendance and diligently maintain accurate records. The CBSE has reiterated that adhering to these attendance rules will help nurture well-rounded individuals prepared for academic success and personal growth.
