Savannah Judy is best known as half of the Indie Rock band Duplexity. Duplexity consists of Savannah and her brother Luke Judy. Duplexity has just released their first original EP entitled Billboards. The EP contains the hits Billboards, Drop the Act, Demons, Black Dress, and Breaks My Heart. As an actress she has had roles in such projects as the western “A Soldier’s Revenge”, “Bombshell”, “Party Mom”, “Christmas With the Andersons”, and “Special Unit”. Passionate about giving back, Savannah lends her voice to support the important work of St. Jude whenever she can. When not working, Savannah enjoys writing song lyrics, experimenting with hair and makeup, and drawing.
HI, WELCOME TO ABOUT INSIDER! THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO CHAT WITH US! CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, WHO IS SAVANNAH JUDY IN YOUR OWN WORDS?
I am an artistic, funny, and passionate person who loves music! I have been acting since I was 7 years old. My favorite project I have ever done is Duplexity, my rock band I formed with my brother Luke Judy. I love all aspects of music from writing a song to my favorite, performing live. In my downtime I like to draw and play games with friends.
YOU’VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ON A WIDE RANGE OF FILM AND TELEVISION PROJECTS WITH NOTABLE ACTORS. CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE FROM YOUR WORK IN “A SOLDIER’S REVENGE” OR ANY OTHER PROJECT THAT HAS LEFT A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU?
A memorable experience from “A Soldier’s Revenge” is when my brother Luke and I were standing off camera waiting to go on set and our costar, Val Kilmer came over to us and said the funniest thing. He said, “Which one of you do I cook and eat first?” My brother and I were shocked at first, then we started laughing and I put Luke in front of me and pretended to give him over. What an ice breaker! He then introduced himself and we did a scene with him, and I witnessed some of the greatest acting of all time, right in front of my eyes. I will never forget my experience working with Val!
YOU’RE NOT ONLY AN ACCOMPLISHED ACTRESS BUT ALSO A TALENTED MUSICIAN, PLAYING BASS AND SINGING IN THE BAND DUPLEXITY WITH YOUR BROTHER, LUKE JUDY. HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR LOVE FOR BOTH ACTING AND MUSIC, AND DO THESE PASSIONS INFLUENCE EACH OTHER IN YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
In my opinion, acting and music are super similar. When I sing and perform, that is the actor’s side of me. When I play my instruments and write songs, that is the musician’s side of me. Knowing how to act really helps with stage presence, it helps you “get into character”. I took Improv classes for many years, so that skill makes it easy for me to talk on stage and think quickly on my feet. I think all musicians should also take acting classes. They are so closely connected through the performance aspect.
YOUR RECENT EP, “BILLBOARDS,” WITH DUPLEXITY HAS GARNERED ATTENTION. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS PROJECT AND THE MESSAGE YOU HOPE TO CONVEY THROUGH YOUR MUSIC?
Our inspiration behind our debut EP “Billboards” was to combine an eclectic mix of rock, pop, and alternative music to show the various sides of our life and personalities. We naturally have been building a young following of teens and we hope our following relates to our music. Our message to our followers is to be who you are, accept your emotions, and believe in yourself even if it seems the word doesn’t!
YOU’RE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN SUPPORTING THE WORK OF ST. JUDE. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A VOICE FOR THIS CAUSE, AND ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC INITIATIVES OR EXPERIENCES YOU’D LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT?
What motivated me to become a voice for the cause of St Jude was to support kids in need in any way I can!! But I like to donate because parents get hit very hard when their children are sick, so they need support. Our entire childhood, Luke, my brother, was sick. I witnessed firsthand how much it affected my parents, especially my mom and caused so many different emotions for us all. If I can help, even in the littlest way for parents who are struggling, then I’m happy to do so.
IN ADDITION TO YOUR ARTISTIC PURSUITS, YOU MENTIONED ENJOYING WRITING SONG LYRICS, EXPERIMENTING WITH HAIR AND MAKEUP, AND DRAWING. HOW DO THESE CREATIVE OUTLETS CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE, AND DO YOU SEE THEM INTERSECTING WITH YOUR ACTING AND MUSIC ENDEAVORS?
I am an artistic person. I come from a family of artists. My creative abilities contribute to my life by making everything I do super unique! So, anything I do will have a sprinkle of artistic flair. I created all of our album covers (with some images from our beloved photographer Teren Oddo) and I plan to keep making them! I love to put things together and make an awesome piece of art. My artistic nature makes me a natural actress, performer, and musician. I always do my own makeup, but my mom does my hair. I can’t thank my mom for my ability to be crafty because she’s an excellent hairdresser and artist. She’s the reason why my hair always looks good, having my own professional stylist 24/7 has been such a blessing my whole life!
AS A TALENTED ACTRESS WITH A DIVERSE PORTFOLIO OF ROLES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO ASPIRING ACTORS LOOKING TO BREAK INTO THE INDUSTRY BASED ON YOUR JOURNEY AND EXPERIENCES?
The advice I would give someone wanting to start acting is to always be themselves. When I was younger, I would struggle with finding identity in acting roles. Then one day I realized that the only person I can be 100% is myself! Since I started bringing this attitude into my audition prep, I have had more fun throughout the entire process and an easier time playing various characters.
LOOKING AHEAD TO THE FUTURE, WHAT EXCITING PROJECTS OR ASPIRATIONS CAN YOUR FANS AND FOLLOWERS ANTICIPATE FROM SAVANNAH JUDY IN 2024 AND BEYOND?
Exciting projects that our fans can anticipate from me in the future is that my band Duplexity is planning to release a second EP and or an album in 2024! We have a few music videos we have completed, and we will be playing live shows on a more regular basis. We would love to go on tour also! Stay tuned!
WHAT’S SOMETHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU THAT MIGHT SURPRISE US?
Something about me that might surprise people is that I am a huge anime lover/fan. I watch all the shows. I have so many shirts and figures from many different Animes. My favorite Animes of all time are Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen! In 2020 I actually started writing and illustrating my own anime comic and hope to one day complete it and pitch it to be published.
WHAT IS ONE MESSAGE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE TO YOUR FANS?
The biggest message I have for my fans, and everyone, is to always love yourself just how you are! Having the courage to be yourself, for some people, is hard. If I can inspire one person to be who they truly are and love themself for it, then I have succeeded!
