For many aspiring students in India, the dream of pursuing higher education at prestigious international institutions like Cornell University often remains distant due to financial limitations. Recognizing this challenge, the Tata Education and Development Trust, a philanthropic affiliate of the Tata Group, has taken a significant step to make this dream a reality for deserving Indian students. With a generous $25 million endowment, the trust has established the Tata Scholarship, providing crucial financial assistance to Indian undergraduates at Cornell University.
The Tata Scholarship reflects the values and vision of Ratan Tata, former chairman of Tata Group. He is himself an alumnus of Cornell University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture. His deep connection to his alma mater and commitment to advancing educational opportunities for Indian students are at the heart of this initiative. As a trustee of Cornell University, Ratan Tata has continuously supported efforts that encourage academic excellence, both within India and abroad.
The Tata Scholarship is awarded annually to approximately 20 deserving Indian students who have been admitted to Cornell University for undergraduate studies. It covers the entire duration of the student’s undergraduate program, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their educational pursuits. This funding extends up to eight semesters of full-time study, with an exception for the five-year architecture program, which requires ten semesters. However, the scholarship does not provide funding for additional semesters due to dual degrees or double majors.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
To qualify for the Tata Scholarship, applicants must meet specific criteria:
1. Citizenship and Education: Applicants must be citizens of India and have completed their secondary education in India.
2. Cornell Admission: They must have been offered admission to Cornell University as an undergraduate student.
3. Financial Need: Applicants must be eligible for need-based financial aid and should apply for financial assistance through the CSS Profile.
The scholarship selection process prioritizes students accepted into specific programs at Cornell, including the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, the College of Engineering, the Applied Economics and Management major at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, and majors in the biological, physical, and social sciences.
Enabling Dreams of Higher Education
Through this scholarship, the Tata Education and Development Trust offers financial support and empowers the next generation of Indian leaders, innovators, and changemakers. Many scholarship recipients have gone on to make significant contributions in their respective fields, bringing knowledge, expertise, and global perspectives to India.
By funding undergraduate studies at one of the world’s leading universities, the Tata Scholarship ensures that deserving Indian students have the opportunity to realize their full potential, regardless of their financial background. For these scholars, Cornell is no longer just a dream—it is an attainable reality.
