New York Tops List of World’s Wealthiest Cities in 2024

New York City has once again been ranked the world’s wealthiest city, according to Henley & Partners’ 2024 World’s Wealthiest Cities Report. The city boasts an economy valued at £1 trillion in 2023 and is home to 349,500 millionaires, 675 centi-millionaires (worth at least £100 million), and 60 billionaires.

New York’s position at the top is driven mainly by Wall Street, with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq—the world’s largest stock markets playing a crucial role in the city’s economic dominance.

The report highlights shifting global wealth patterns, with Northern California’s Bay Area, which includes San Francisco and Silicon Valley, climbing to second place. Over the past decade, the region’s millionaire population has surged by 82%, reaching 305,700 millionaires, 675 centi-millionaires, and 68 billionaires.

Meanwhile, Tokyo, which was the world’s wealthiest city a decade ago, has now slipped to third place due to a decline in the number of high-net-worth individuals living there.

The report also underscores the growing economic strength of Indian cities, with Mumbai and Delhi securing spots in the top 50 wealthiest cities worldwide, ranking 24th and 37th, respectively. This reflects India’s increasing prominence in the global economy and the country’s rapid rise of rich individuals.

Henley & Partners’ 2024 report showcases a dynamic shift in global wealth distribution, with New York maintaining its dominance, the Bay Area experiencing significant growth, and emerging economies like India gaining ground. Cities worldwide are witnessing transformations in their wealth rankings, shaping the future of the global economy.
