Now 20 and embracing her artistic evolution, Kacey Fifield is back with the high-energy single “Jane Austen Reader.” The pop-rock track satirizes “performative” trend-chasers—the matcha-drinking, Labubu-owning men who feign sophistication to impress. Fifield, inspired by the spirit of early feminism, explains the song is “poking fun” at those who read classics just to “seem intelligent,” asserting that authenticity will always win over fleeting social trends. She also shares the track’s sonic nod to 2010s rock, particularly Metric’s “Black Sheep.”
HEY KACEY FIFIELD, WELCOME TO ABOUT INSIDER! SINCE OUR LAST CONVERSATION IN 2024, WHAT FEELS MOST DIFFERENT ABOUT KACEY FIFIELD IN 2025?
I’m 20 years old now and am no longer a teen, which feels crazy to say! My personal growth this past year definitely made a significant difference in my artistic evolution. I have been collaborating with multiple co-writers and producers and learning a lot from those experiences. My EP “Seeing Stars” (released earlier this year) was a part of that journey in finding my unique original sound and understanding myself better as a songwriter. More exciting things are coming soon, so stay tuned!
WHAT SPARKED THE IDEA FOR “JANE AUSTEN READER,” AND WHY THAT TITLE SPECIFICALLY?
My new single ,“Jane Austen Reader,” pokes fun at the current trend of “performative males” while pointing out a larger societal issue. The guy I am singing about is changing himself to fit the mold of who he thinks will appeal to others. I came up with the title based on Jane Austen being a quintessential example of early feminism. Jane Austen is great—the song is just making fun of people who read her books for the sake of seeming intelligent and educated, rather than for enjoyment, especially men who read Jane Austen just to appeal to women.
THE SONG SATIRIZES “PERFORMATIVE” BEHAVIOR, WHAT REAL-LIFE MOMENTS OR TRENDS INSPIRED THE LYRICS?
The guy I am singing about is a matcha drinker, Labubu owner and “Jane Austen Reader” just for show and these traits are just symbols of the way he is acting to appeal to others. In the song, I sing “big dreams, you’re losing it slowly” and talk about how that has impacted our relationship: “I fell for the fantasy, but you let it burn.

WHERE IS THE LINE FOR YOU BETWEEN AUTHENTIC CURIOSITY AND TREND-CHASING (MATCHA, LABUBU, ETC.)?
The bottom line is that you do not need to change yourself to fit current trends. Just be your true self and go through life with integrity, as social trends come and go.
WHICH LYRIC WAS THE HARDEST TO NAIL, AND WHAT FINALLY MADE IT CLICK?
None of the lyrics were particularly challenging, but I did have to think on what to say in the second verse to advance the storyline and not get repetitive with what was already mentioned. I love the way it turned out!
TAKE US INSIDE THE SESSION WITH MIKE PEPE, AJ PEACOX, AND EMMA RUCHEFSKY, WHO BROUGHT WHAT TO THE TABLE?
I wrote most of the lyrics and bounced ideas off with my co-writers as far as melodies and final lyrics. The writing process was smooth and super quick to be honest! I worked with Mike and AJ before on “HOLD UR PEACE” so it was fun to collaborate again.
SONICALLY IT IS A POP-ROCK BANGER, WHAT TONES OR REFERENCES GUIDED THE GUITARS AND PRODUCTION?
Sonically, we were super inspired by the production of “Black Sheep” and other songs by the band Metric! We put our own spin on it for sure, but I think the guitar is especially reminiscent of 2010s rock.
THE SHORT-FILM MUSIC VIDEO BEGINS A CONTINUING STORY, WHAT IS THE “CHAPTER ONE” WE’LL SEE FIRST?
You need to watch the video! The story connects the listener to the lyrics and leaves room for imagination, paving the way for a sequel.

HOW DOES “JANE AUSTEN READER” SET THE TONE FOR YOUR 2026 EP, WHAT NEW RISKS/COLORS ARE YOU EXPLORING?
I love starting a new sonic era with a bang. “HOLD UR PEACE” similarly marked the energetic start to the “Seeing Stars” era but thematically diverges from “Jane Austen Reader” quite a bit. I think the trajectory of my next EP will become super clear with my next few releases.
