Maintaining employee morale is essential for a positive work culture. Because of the wave of tech layoffs worldwide, employees have become low in morale and started feeling stressed as they witness their fellow team members being forced to leave the company.

This is why Intel announced it would resume offering free coffee and tea in its offices to boost morale amid sweeping workforce reductions. The decision comes after Intel’s recent layoff of 15,000 employees, a substantial cut to address ongoing cost challenges. The company shared this initiative with employees through an internal message, emphasising Intel’s intent to make the workplace more supportive despite financial constraints.

“Although Intel still faces cost challenges, we understand that small comforts play a significant role in our daily routines,” the internal note read. “We know this is a small step, but we hope it is a meaningful one in supporting our workplace culture.” However, the company clarified that free fruit would not be making a return, a decision that has left some employees disappointed.

The return of free beverages highlights Intel’s efforts to soften its austerity measures’ impact and cultivate a positive workplace culture as it faces tough times. Since the 1990s, Intel has been a dominant force in the semiconductor industry, driving the PC boom that defined modern computing. However, the company’s focus on personal computers left it vulnerable in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. Intel missed key opportunities, such as the chance to manufacture chips for Apple’s iPhone and to partner with OpenAI in its early stages – a decision that has since become a major regret as artificial intelligence exploded into a global market.

Intel’s struggles have been compounded by manufacturing delays, notably its 7-nanometer chips in 2020, which allowed competitors like Samsung and TSMC to gain significant ground. As Intel’s market valuation declined, the company enacted aggressive cost-cutting measures. In addition to layoffs, Intel reduced or cut reimbursements for employee internet, phone, and commuting costs, which is described as a necessary step to ensure financial stability.

In September, Intel informed employees that the longstanding perks of free coffee, tea, and fruit would be discontinued in some offices, a move that sparked backlash from current and former employees alike. “That’s petty, right? How much does one piece of fruit per day cost?” a former Intel employee told Business Insider, voicing frustration at eliminating what was seen as a basic workplace benefit.

While the reinstatement of coffee and tea might seem minor, it reflects a company-wide attempt to boost morale and foster a sense of normalcy amid a period of challenging transitions. For Intel, this gesture may serve as a small but meaningful effort to keep employees motivated as it seeks to reclaim its footing in the competitive semiconductor industry.
