How India is Helping Skilled Workers Secure Global Jobs

India has one of the largest overseas populations, growing from 18 million in 2020 to 32 million today. With a young workforce of 65% under age 35 and a median age of 28, the country is poised to become a global talent hub. Recognizing this potential, the Indian government has launched several initiatives to help skilled workers secure jobs abroad.

Key Government Initiatives

Skill India International Centres (SIICs)

These centres provide specialized training and support to Indians seeking overseas employment. Currently, two SIICs are operational in Varanasi and Bhubaneswar, with five more under development. These centres aim to equip workers with the necessary skills to meet international job market requirements.

Pre-Departure Orientation Training (PDOT)

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) runs the PDOT program in collaboration with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). This free, eight-hour training session educates migrant workers on local culture, laws, and welfare systems in their destination countries. Centres in Chennai, Gorakhpur, and Chandigarh began operations in 2019 to facilitate smoother transitions for Indian workers abroad.

e-Migrate Platform

The e-Migrate system, managed by the MEA, streamlines the migration process for Indian job seekers. This platform connects job seekers, recruiters, and employers while ensuring proper documentation and grievance redressal. With over 2,100 recruiting agents and 280,000 employers onboard, the system enhances transparency and efficiency.

The Emigration Check Required (ECR) process also regulates overseas employment, particularly for blue-collar workers. Integrated with the Passport Sewa Project and Bureau of Immigration, this system ensures that only emigrants with valid clearance are permitted to travel, protecting them from exploitation.

Future Outlook

The government is committed to aligning India’s skill development programs with global job market trends. The 2025 budget reflects this vision, focusing on expanding educational opportunities and fostering innovation in fields like AI. By investing in human capital and facilitating overseas employment, India is strengthening its position as a global provider of skilled talent.
