Interview with J.Fla on Her Self-Produced EP Moon Eater

With more than 17 million YouTube subscribers and billions of views, J.Fla has built a global fanbase that has followed her from heartfelt covers to her own original sound. Now, with her new EP Moon Eater, she is reintroducing herself to the world. In conversation with Dr. Gaurav Gulati for About Insider, J.Fla shares her journey of independence, her creative process, and the deeper meaning behind her music.

WELCOME TO ABOUT INSIDER, J.FLA! TO BEGIN, HOW ARE YOU FEELING AS YOU STEP INTO THIS EXCITING NEW CHAPTER WITH YOUR SELF-PRODUCED EP MOON EATER?
It feels as if I am finally opening the door to a little room I have been quietly building for years and inviting everyone in. I feel very proud and very excited.

MANY PEOPLE FIRST DISCOVERED YOU THROUGH YOUR HEARTFELT YOUTUBE COVERS. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO NOW REINTRODUCE YOURSELF TO THE WORLD PURELY THROUGH YOUR OWN ORIGINAL MUSIC?
I am so grateful for that chapter. It taught me how important consistency is for a musician. Reintroducing myself with original music still feels a little awkward and a little vulnerable. There is nowhere to hide, and that somehow feels right for me now.

MOON EATER CARRIES A STRONG SENSE OF INDEPENDENCE AND TRANSFORMATION. WHAT PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OR EMOTIONS INFLUENCED ITS CREATION THE MOST?
I made this album by listening closely to my inner voice. Quiet late nights of doubt led me to choose courage over anxiety, and that choice shaped it the most.

Exclusive Interview with J.Fla on Her Self-Produced EP Moon Eater

THE TITLE TRACK “MOON EATER” IS SO POWERFUL AND SYMBOLIC. CAN YOU SHARE WHAT THAT IMAGERY MEANS TO YOU ON A DEEPER, PERSONAL LEVEL?
The blue moon symbolises a rare chance. ‘Eating’ it means making that chance truly mine.

YOUR SOUND BLENDS VINTAGE-INSPIRED ROCK AND POP WITH MODERN ELECTRONIC TEXTURES. HOW DID YOU DISCOVER AND SHAPE THIS UNIQUE SONIC IDENTITY FOR THE EP?
I wanted classic foundations such as drums, bass, guitar and Mellotron. If a sound did not serve the feeling of the song, I left it out.

AS AN ARTIST WITH SUCH A MASSIVE GLOBAL FOLLOWING, HOW DO YOU BALANCE STAYING AUTHENTIC TO YOUR VISION WHILE ALSO MEETING THE EXPECTATIONS OF MILLIONS OF LISTENERS?
Chasing trends is not my compass. If a song feels honest, I trust listeners will feel that as well. I know I have not always been the best at communicating, so I may not have met everyone’s expectations. I want to connect much more from now on.

YOU’VE BUILT NOT ONLY A LOYAL FANBASE BUT ALSO A STRONG PERSONAL BRAND. WHAT ROLE HAS THAT PLAYED IN YOUR ARTISTIC JOURNEY, AND HOW DO YOU SEE IT EVOLVING WITH THIS NEW ERA?
In the past I focused on keeping my promises to fans. In this new era I want to carry that promise into bolder work such as transformation, evolution and challenge. I am working to put true sincerity into the stories and into the sound.

Interview J.Fla

AT ABOUT INSIDER, WE LOVE GOING BEHIND THE SCENES. WHAT’S ONE “INSIDER” DETAIL ABOUT THE MAKING OF MOON EATER THAT FANS MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN?
It may sound a bit funny, but for a vintage feel I tried stuffing lots of tissues, such as Kleenex, under the strings when recording guitar and bass to get a soft, rounded, muted thump.

FINALLY, WHAT’S YOUR HOPE FOR LISTENERS WHEN THEY HEAR THIS EP? WHAT DO YOU WANT THEM TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR MUSIC AND STORY?
I hope this music gives you a little spark of brave energy, a touch of courage and the urge to try.
