At the 2024 Olympics fencing competitions, all eyes are on Sara Balzer, one of France’s top sabre fencers. With determination, technical prowess, and mental resilience, Balzer has quickly become a name to watch in the fencing arena and beyond.

Sara Balzer is making headlines for her prowess in fencing and stunning looks, making her known as a “fencing beauty.” With 146K Instagram followers, her bio proudly states that she is the World n°1, Olympic and World medalist, @dior ambassador, @adidas athlete, and Image architecture @lamdeparis.

Sara Balzer was born and raised in Strasbourg, France, into a family with deep roots in both France and Algeria. Her grandfather, a former soldier, moved to France following the Algerian War, bringing Balzer’s mother, who grew up in Strasbourg. In this city, Sara’s journey into fencing began at the tender age of eight.

Inspired by her older sister, Sara took up fencing despite her mother’s initial reservations about her copying her sibling. However, it didn’t take long for her coach, Philippe Nicholas, to recognize her natural talent. Within just three months, Sara won her first competition, a victory that marked the beginning of her illustrious career.

Balzer’s ambition to compete at the highest level was ignited in 2008 when she watched the Olympic Games on television. The sight of athletes achieving their dreams on the world stage inspired her to set her sights on becoming an Olympic champion. By then, she was already participating in competitions and performing exceptionally well.

Balzer describes fencing as a sport that requires not just physical speed and technical excellence but also a strong mental game. The strategy, tactics, and years of practice necessary to excel in the sport have shaped Balzer into the disciplined and resilient athlete she is today.

Fencing is as much a mental sport as it is a physical one, and Balzer has honed her mental strength with the help of a dedicated mental coach and a psychologist. Over the years, she has developed techniques for managing stress and pressure, crucial for maintaining focus during intense competitions. Yoga, breathing exercises, and regular sessions with her mental coach have become integral parts of her preparation.

“Fencing has taught me work ethic, perseverance, and resilience,” Balzer shared in an exclusive interview. These qualities have fueled her success in the sport and shaped her approach to life outside of fencing.

Sara Balzer Education and a Sports Career

Despite the demands of her fencing career, Balzer pursued her education with determination. After earning her baccalaureate, she initially tried a physical activity and sport sciences (STAPS) course but soon realized it wasn’t the right fit for her. Encouraged by her mother, who trained as a coach, Sara turned to psychology—a field that fascinated her and provided valuable insights into her mental game.

Balzer has found a way to balance her academic interests with her sports career by studying psychology through a distance course at the National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance (INSEP). Her studies have helped her stay grounded and improved her ability to manage emotions and relationships in the high-pressure world of competitive fencing.

Balzer’s journey has not been without its challenges. Balancing school and sports during her high school years was particularly tough, and her early experiences with failure in fencing took a toll on her mental state. However, her mother’s unwavering support and guidance helped her persevere, pushing her to complete her education and pursue her Olympic dreams.

Financial challenges have also been a part of Balzer’s journey. While the French Fencing Federation (FFE) covers a portion of her expenses, the cost of competitions and equipment often outstrips available funding. Despite these obstacles, Balzer remains committed to her sport, driven by a passion that has only grown stronger over the years.

Sara Balzer Life Beyond Fencing

Balzer is passionate about animal rights and environmental causes outside the fencing arena. She hopes to use her platform to advocate for these issues, and she has expressed a desire to work with organizations like Solida’Rio, which supports underprivileged children in Brazil by introducing them to new experiences and sports.

As Balzer competes in the 2024 Olympics, she carries with her the hopes of her nation and the values and lessons learned from a lifetime dedicated to her sport. Whether on the piste or in her life beyond fencing, Sara Balzer embodies the spirit of perseverance, discipline, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
