Recently, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of India’s largest IT firms, announced plans to lay off about 12,000 employees. This decision, revealed in July, has led to marked unrest among workers and protests led by the Union of IT & ITES Employees (UNITE) in Chennai.

On a Tuesday, employees gathered in Chennai to voice their discontent about the layoffs, which are primarily affecting mid and senior-level staff. The protesters held banners and placards with messages like “Unionize” and criticized the management by labeling them “Chief of Cruelty” and “Chief of Corporate Greed.”

Janani, a representative from the UNITE union, spoke out against what they claim could lead to a much larger number of job losses, estimating potential layoffs could reach between 30,000 to 40,000. The union argues that TCS is replacing experienced workers with younger talent at significantly lower salaries, often around 80% to 85% less.

In response to the backlash, TCS has firmly rejected the claims of mass layoffs. The company stated that the rumors regarding 30,000 job cuts are “incorrect and misleading,” emphasizing that only around 2% of its workforce will be affected. TCS highlighted its financial success, reporting substantial revenue and profits, which they believe makes the layoffs unnecessary.

The protesting union is advocating for TCS to focus on upskilling its workforce instead of laying off experienced employees. They argue that with the company’s substantial profits, cutting jobs is simply a profit-driven decision rather than a necessary measure.

The union’s statement heightened tension by asserting that TCS is prioritizing corporate profits over job security, declaring, “Workers are not numbers on a balance sheet, we demand justice!”

As TCS moves forward with its plans, the tension between the management and employees continues to grow. The situation raises important questions about job security and the treatment of workers in the tech industry. With the ongoing protests and union demands, the response from TCS and the government will be crucial in determining the future of the affected employees.
