It seems like the American dream has slightly changed in accordance with the times. More and more folks are ditching the bungalow-style houses for quaint apartments. The sudden apartment construction boom across the country is undoubtedly bringing renters much-needed relief.

However, unique challenges of this lifestyle abound, especially when it comes to getting peace. In many cases, noisy neighbors can lead residents to frantically look for effective solutions.

Some wonder whether a white noise machine would be the answer. Others are driven to ask, “Do sound-dampening panels work and keep the noise out?” If your neighbors are also testing your patience, it’s time to act before you explode.

In this article, we will share four useful tips to claim back your peace from noisy apartment neighbors.

Communicate the Issue

Even when it comes to noisy neighbors, every issue is unique. Perhaps you experience thumping sounds from upstairs, or your neighbors listen to music at high volume. Both of these issues showcase a lack of sensitivity and consideration on their part.

It is also possible that they’re just not aware of the discomfort they’re causing. This is especially true in the case of youngsters who simply want to enjoy life. In any case, it is best to err on the side of kindness first.

Even if you feel a strong urge to respond angrily, resist it and choose to talk things out. Ditching a level-headed approach may escalate the situation, thereby causing even more chaos. Have a polite conversation about how your neighbors’ constant thumping or partying is affecting your household.

Discuss with them your sleep or work hours so they know the time you need some quiet. Facing your neighbor may seem challenging, particularly if you’re non-confrontational by nature. However, a face-to-face talk may be effective enough to resolve the problem.

Invest in Noise-Cancelation Technologies

Studies have discovered that apartment construction in the US is reaching an all-time high by the end of 2024. Of all metropolitan areas, New York City, Austin, and Dallas are witnessing the greatest surge.

Apartment living has its perks, but getting peaceful neighbors is often a stroke of fortune. In case yours are the noisy kind and resistant to a mature conversation, consider investing in noise-cancellation tech solutions.

One example would be noise-canceling headphones or earplugs. The former can help with better concentration at work, whereas the latter is a good way to get sound sleep. These audio devices come with an in-built microphone that analyzes the surrounding ambient sound waves.

If loud sounds are detected, they will produce opposite reversed sound waves to neutralize the effect. Another effective noise-canceling technology is a white noise machine.

It can help you sleep peacefully by masking disrupting sounds. If you do not wish to purchase a machine, download any white noise phone applications or subscribe to similar audio streaming services.

Fortify Your Home to Fight Noises

There’s a saying that goes – thin walls make bad neighbors. What if your neighbors are not the only problem? Your apartment may have paper-thin walls that were not designed with sound control in mind. This can transmit even the faintest sound from neighbor to neighbor.

If that’s the case, it’s time to fortify your home to fight the noises. There are many ways you can do this. Let’s look at some of the most useful and common ones.

  • Invest in sound-dampening acoustic panels that can be placed strategically within different rooms. According to Felt Right, they are made of dense porous materials that can reduce vibrations within a space. What’s more, is that the panels are usually available in stylish designs. This means your apartment can get a much-needed facelift.
  • Besides acoustic panels, install thick and soft furnishings in the form of floor rugs and wall tapestries. They will also absorb excessive noise and become decorative elements for the space.
  • The third way to fortify your home against noise is by installing wooden bookshelves. This method works best if the noise is emitted from next-door neighbors. Wood is a natural insulator and will absorb sound. The books or other items on the shelf will fill the negative space, together acting as a good barrier against unwanted sounds.
  • While windows form an important part of any high-rise, they’re also good mediums for noise to transmit. You can install noise-canceling window treatments like soundproofing curtains for added insulation. Even acoustic window inserts are available to cancel out incoming noise.
  • As for the doors, the main problem is with the space usually found between the bottom of the door and the floor. Two effective ways to close the gap are door draft stoppers and rubber seals.

File a Complaint

Though this strategy should be kept as the last resort, use it if you must. You did all of the above but the problem persists because your neighbors are clearly inconsiderate of those around them. Consult with the property manager as they may have dealt with a similar issue.

Before you do so, try gathering as much evidence as possible to prove that your neighbors are noisy. You can even file a complaint with the local noise ordinance. This will make your property manager send a formal warning to the annoying neighbors.

Check whether online filing is available, and do so anonymously. At the most extreme, you can contact your local police. Keep this option as the very last resort, and that too if your neighbors’ noise may be a result of some criminal activity. Do not dial 911 for simple noise disputes as the line is open for emergencies.

As apartment numbers rise across the US, so do rental woes. The Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University (JCHS) found that households are burdened with rental and utility costs.

With such problems on the horizon, noisy neighbors can come as an added blow. If you’re currently plagued by neighbors who could care less, try implementing the strategies discussed here. Sometimes, a single strategy may work as a panacea. At other times, you may need to use a combination of these to claim back your peace.
