Rising singer-songwriter Stephen Mugford returns with a fresh take on his breakout debut, releasing the live rendition of “Easy to Love” — a standout track from his jazz-centric album Palooza Beach, which first dropped on September 13, 2024.
The single marks the first of four forthcoming live releases from the project, arriving this fall, each designed to capture the unpolished emotion at the heart of Mugford’s songwriting. “It was a chance to capture the less filtered, raw feelings that all of these songs emanate from,” Mugford tells Billboard. “I love the produced versions, but these are simpler and more raw expressions of the deep emotions that were at the centre of each of them.”
Guided by the upbeat spirit of Jason Mraz, the melodic craftsmanship of Paul McCartney, and the warm acoustic ease of Willie Nelson, “Easy to Love (Live)” distills Mugford’s strengths as both a storyteller and performer. The stripped-down acoustic arrangement highlights his nuanced vocals and the emotional intimacy that defines his sound, offering a glimpse into the human complexities of love and connection.
Two additional live singles — “Wild Things” and “Runnin’” — are slated to follow before the full EP release. “Wild Things” serves as a heartfelt ode to his children, celebrating difference as a kind of superpower, while “Runnin’” offers a meditative take on growing older alongside his wife — a song he says came together in just seven minutes. An accompanying video for “Backside of the Moon” will further explore the highs and hurdles of parenthood, adding visual depth to Mugford’s evolving narrative.
Behind the boards, longtime collaborator John Escobar reshuffles roles, stepping in on drums and rhythm guitar, while pianist Zahili Gonzalez Zamora expands the live sound with her textured, jazz-inflected playing. The combination creates space for Mugford to focus on what he does best: storytelling through voice and emotion.
With a background in poetry and years of performance experience, Mugford continues to prove himself a compelling new voice in contemporary singer-songwriter circles. His lyrics are sharp yet vulnerable, his delivery equal parts precision and warmth — a rare balance that makes his music linger long after the final note.
“Easy to Love (Live)” is available now on all streaming platforms.
