Speaking with Danilo Alano Principe: A writer with lessons to share

HELLO DANILO ALANO PRINCIPE, WELCOME TO ABOUT INSIDER! WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PITCH THE BOOK IN THIS STYLE OF WRITING?
Accountancy has been my lifetime career starting from my CPA review days when I started leading my classmates in the CPA review  group which led me to the teaching profession. I began teaching accounting even before I took the CPA examinations. I started teaching accounting even before I passed the examination. I was working as an accounting staff in a manufacturing company and teaching in the accounting in the evening. After five years I became a CPA review coach and initiated the Accounting teachers’ Conference annual event,  with a co-review coach Mama Feliza “Lola” Bertol.
When the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) was required for all CPAs in around early 1970s, I became active in conduction CPE classes for CPAs at the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants and in the different city and provincial chapters of PICPA which led me to initiate the “CPE on the ROAD”  project, I believe in audio-visual lectures so I used slide projectors in my sessions using the old carousel using cartoons illustrations specifically made for the topics.  These audio visual lectures inspired me to write the illustrated accounting book.

WHERE DID YOU GET INSPIRATION FOR THE COVER ART?
I have noticed since I was an accounting student that so many of my classmates in the business administration courses are so adversed and afraid of accounting, and I also noticed that when I started teaching in the business courses. That’s the source of the title of the book Who’s Afraid of Accounting?.   To emphasize the “FEAR” I concocted the idea of a man standing on the chair afraid of a rat, with the rat saying, “Hi, my name is ACCOUNTING!”  My son JADE, who has been helping me in the book project was a collaborator in such idea. He helped me design the cover of the book.

HOW DO YOU WANT STUDENTS TO EMBRACE THE BOOK AND LEARN FROM IT?
The book is presented the way I would have taught the subject matter using the well connected and well thought of visuals and well connected jokes along the way.  I always want to have a “Fun Class” so both the student and I enjoy without sacrificing the learning.

HOW DID YOUR OWN LEARNING JOURNEY SHAPE THE WAY YOU WROTE THE BOOK?
Most of the items in the book were from actual teaching/lecturing sessions.

DID YOU TALK THROUGH YOUR IDEAS WITH ANY FELLOW PROFESSIONALS?
In a way yes because most of the topics specially the joke or fun related items were actual results of inter-action with the audience (mostly the students and professionals doing the CPE) I am also very close to most accounting teachers in fact I was partly intrumental in putting up the national association of accounting teachers the nACPAE (National Association  of CPAs in Education) which I lead as president  for two years.

WHAT’S THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO SUCCEED?
Relate to them the importance of the topics and the necessity for them to appreciate it so they can share it to the world.Let them feel that they will later on  be the source of knowledge as a mentor, teacher, a supervisor or simply a “model” CPA.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR BOOK TO BE USED BY THE STUDENT COMMUNITY?
Digest and enjoy and  share the treasures they bear.

HOW CAREFUL WERE YOU TO PITCH THIS BOOK AT A WIDE RANGE OF ABILITIES?
I simply present things as treasures to share in my own meaningful way of presenting topics.  A way of enjoying the topics likewise.

HOW LONG DO WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR VOLUME 2 TO HIT THE SHELVES?
Volume 2 and 3 are already prepared and being processed for publication with the help of my son.  In fact, I have already began the sequel, “Beneath and Beyond Financial Statements” a book on analysis of FS.

WHAT DO YOU THINK READER WILL SAY ABOUT YOUR BOOK 10 YEARS FURTHER INTO THEIR CAREERS?
I wish somebody will finance the production of the books and have them available in all public schools in the Philippines  The book is quite expensive since  it is published in full color and with a durable type of paper.
