A recent Glassdoor report reveals a troubling trend: loneliness is rising in workplaces, particularly among younger employees. The study indicates that 6 in 10 employees with less than five years of experience feel isolated. Despite the easing of pandemic restrictions, social connections within workplaces are still struggling to recover, leading many to believe that their companies have become less friendly. However, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky offers a promising solution to combat this issue.

In a conversation with Wharton psychologist Adam Grant on the ReThinking podcast, Chesky proposed a strategic approach for managers to address workplace loneliness. He suggested that managers identify pairs of employees who collaborate effectively and place them on the same team.

“I often do pair people,” Chesky said. “Four years ago, we hired two creative directors. They worked together as a duo… It worked so well that I started thinking about this notion of duos in other areas.”

Chesky shared that this tactic, originally meant to improve work output, took on a broader purpose over time. “Sometimes it’s just hard for one person to be a unicorn, to be able to do everything, but if you could create duos, they could cover each other’s strengths,” he explained. “So giving people a shared journey to be on together I think is really important… It’s a brilliant idea.”

Adam Grant echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of having a trusted colleague at work. “Having one friend at work significantly reduces the odds of loneliness,” Grant said. “And what really hit home for me… was the idea that I don’t always need to have a deep connection with everybody on my team. I need to have one person who I know has my back, who relies on me, as well as being someone that I can rely on.”

The concept of pairing employees enhances productivity and fosters stronger interpersonal connections, which can mitigate feelings of loneliness. Organizations can create a more supportive and collaborative environment by focusing on duos. This approach recognizes the value of close-knit working relationships, often overlooked in the broader focus on team dynamics.

Workplace loneliness, especially among younger employees, is a pressing issue requiring innovative solutions. Brian Chesky’s strategy of pairing employees could be a game-changer in fostering a more connected and friendly workplace. As companies continue to navigate the post-pandemic landscape, such creative approaches may be crucial in rebuilding social connections and ensuring the well-being of their employees.
