Though it has been months since Professor Sameer Khandekar left us, his legacy resonates deeply within the academic community and beyond. Known for his contributions to mechanical engineering and his dedication to student affairs, Professor Khandekar remains a revered figure, with many still seeking to learn more about his remarkable career and impact.
Professor Sameer Khandekar, a distinguished member of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, tragically passed away during an alumni meet. The 55-year-old scholar suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while delivering a speech on campus. Despite immediate medical attention at Rawatpur’s Cardiology Hospital, the esteemed professor was pronounced dead, leaving attendees and colleagues in shock and mourning.
Exceptional achievements and contributions to the field of mechanical engineering marked Dr. Khandekar’s career. Holding the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Chair Professorship at IIT Kanpur, his research spanned critical areas including two-phase heat transfer, heat pipes, thermosyphons, and energy systems. His academic journey began with an M.Tech. in Fluid-Thermal Engineering from IIT Kanpur, followed by a doctoral degree from the University of Stuttgart, Germany.
Professor Khandekar’s career was distinguished by numerous accolades and roles that underscore his prominence in engineering circles. He was a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Engineers (India). His awards include the P.K. Kelkar Research Fellowship, DAAD Fellowship, Prof. K.N. Seetharamu Award, and the George Grover Medal from the International Heat Pipe Committee.
His role extended beyond research and teaching. As an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Thermal Sciences and Interfacial Phenomena and Heat Transfer, and an executive member of the International Heat Pipe Committee and Indian Heat and Mass Transfer Society, Professor Khandekar played a key role in advancing his field.
He also served as the Associate Dean (Innovation and Incubation) at IIT Kanpur, where he spearheaded initiatives at the SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Center. His commitment to social causes was evident through his leadership at Shiksha Sopan, an NGO dedicated to supporting underprivileged communities.
Prof. Khandekar’s academic excellence was recognized with multiple awards, including five university gold medals and a national merit scholarship for his undergraduate studies. His doctoral dissertation was awarded the highest possible grade, reflecting his outstanding research capabilities.
Professor Khandekar’s contributions extend far beyond his research papers and academic accolades.
