Pope Francis, the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and the first from the Americas, has died at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed his death earlier today.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 when he became the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years.

During his papacy, he was widely recognized for his focus on humility, compassion, and outreach to the poor and marginalized. He also became known for his efforts to modernize the Church and address global issues like climate change, inequality, and migration.

Pope Francis led the Church during a time of both internal reform and external challenges. He was outspoken on social issues, often encouraging dialogue and inclusiveness, and remained a moral voice on the world stage.

The Vatican has announced that details regarding the funeral and the process to elect a new pope, known as the conclave, will be shared soon.

World leaders and religious figures have begun offering condolences, paying tribute to a leader who sought to bring the Church closer to the people.

Pope Francis is remembered not only as a religious leader but also as a symbol of hope, reform, and humanity.
