Miley Cyrus never shies away from honesty, but her latest revelation on Jimmy Kimmel Live! left both the host and viewers stunned. What started as a casual catch-up about her engagement and new single “Dream as One” quickly took a bizarre turn when she admitted to an intense phobia of something most people use every day: paper.

From the moment Miley glanced at the notecards on Kimmel’s desk, she visibly recoiled. “I hate paper,” she confessed, already gagging as she tried to explain. “Looking at that makes me want to vomit.” For several minutes, the pop star tried to talk through her discomfort while fighting back retches, something audiences rarely see from the composed performer.

According to Miley, the issue isn’t just plain sheets. It’s all paper, especially when combined with dry hands. Wrapping paper, mail, envelopes, stationery, cardboard boxes—all of it sends a shiver down her spine. “It’s Christmas, everyone’s touching paper with their dry hands,” she said, wincing at the memory. “I can’t even open letters. I throw them away, even the really lovely ones.”

Doctors call this rare condition papyrophobia, but Miley calls it a daily battle. She says the fear has become overwhelming, and she’s looking into treatment. “I need help. It’s getting worse. I can’t talk about it without gagging. It’s affecting my everyday life.”

Her only exception? Marijuana rolling papers. With a laugh, she reassured Kimmel, “Those are fine.”

During the interview, Miley joked that her fiancé, Maxx Morando, has unknowingly benefited from her phobia. “That’s really why I got engaged,” she said. “I make him open all my packages outside.” With cardboard as her “worst nightmare,” she’s happy to let Maxx handle any delivery that doesn’t arrive digitally.

This revelation comes just days after Miley confirmed her engagement and debuted her gold ring at the Avatar: Fire and Ash premiere. The pop star told Billboard she’s in no rush to walk down the aisle and wants to savor every moment of being a fiancée. Yet, as Kimmel quickly pointed out, she’ll eventually need to sign a marriage certificate, which likely involves paper. Miley, half-laughing and half-cringing, said she thinks she remembers her last certificate being “wax,” adding, “But I had smoked one of those imaginary joints. I can’t really remember.”

Despite her humor, Miley is serious about getting help. She revealed she’s considering EMDR therapy and hypnosis to manage the fear. The singer previously used EMDR to overcome stage fright, sharing that the treatment “saved her life” over the summer.

What makes this moment surprising is how open Miley has become. Known for her boldness, she rarely displays vulnerability on such an intense physical level. But this glimpse of her gagging on national TV, struggling through something most of us never think twice about, felt unusually raw, even for her.

Still, she handled it the only way Miley Cyrus can: with humor, honesty, a little chaos, and a lot of authenticity.
