In one of the biggest developments in India’s startup ecosystem this year, Meta has announced a $900 million investment in fintech company Cred, while founder Kunal Shah is set to take on a new role as the global head of WhatsApp.
The announcement marks a significant milestone not only for Cred but also for India’s growing influence in the global technology industry. It also represents one of the largest funding deals involving an Indian fintech company in recent years.
The investment, worth approximately ₹8,550 crore ($900 million), includes $500 million in fresh capital for Cred and $400 million through secondary share purchases from existing shareholders.
Following the investment, Cred has been valued at around $4.5 billion (₹43,239 crore). Meta will hold a minority stake of less than 20 per cent in the company and has clarified that it will not have access to Cred’s customer data.
The fresh capital is expected to support Cred’s next phase of growth as it continues expanding its financial services platform.
Alongside the investment announcement, Kunal Shah confirmed that he is stepping down from his operational role as CEO of Cred to lead WhatsApp globally.
Although Shah will no longer oversee the company’s day-to-day operations, he will continue to remain Cred’s largest individual shareholder. Miten Sampat, who has been leading strategy and finance at the company, has been appointed interim CEO.
Sharing the news, Shah said Cred is entering a new chapter and expressed confidence in the leadership team’s ability to take the company forward. He added that while his role is changing, his commitment to the business remains the same.
Kunal Shah succeeds Will Cathcart, who has led WhatsApp for the past seven years. Cathcart announced that he would transition to a new role within Meta, describing WhatsApp as being in one of its strongest positions ever.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also welcomed Shah to his new role, signalling the company’s confidence in his leadership and experience building technology businesses.
Meta’s investment goes beyond funding. It reflects growing confidence in India’s technology and fintech ecosystem, where startups are increasingly attracting global strategic investors instead of relying solely on venture capital.
For Cred, the partnership provides additional resources to accelerate product innovation and business expansion. For Meta, it strengthens its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets while bringing an experienced entrepreneur into a key leadership position.
The Bigger Picture
The announcement comes at a time when India’s startup ecosystem is entering a more mature phase. Instead of focusing only on rapid user growth, companies are placing greater emphasis on sustainable businesses, strategic partnerships, and global leadership opportunities.
Kunal Shah’s move from building one of India’s most recognised fintech brands to leading WhatsApp globally also highlights a broader trend: Indian entrepreneurs are increasingly taking on influential leadership roles within some of the world’s largest technology companies.
As artificial intelligence, digital payments, and communication platforms continue to evolve, collaborations between global technology giants and Indian startups are expected to play an even bigger role in shaping the future of digital innovation.
