WELCOME T0 ABOUT INSIDER! THANK YOU FOR JOINING US, DR. KAPIL MEHTA. CAN YOU SHARE WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN CYBERSECURITY AND ACADEMIA?
Thank you for having me! My journey into cybersecurity and academia was driven by a combination of curiosity, passion, and a sense of responsibility. I was always fascinated by technology and how it shapes our world, but as I delved deeper, I realized the increasing importance of securing digital assets. Cybersecurity became a natural choice because it aligns with my interests in problem-solving and the constant need to stay ahead of emerging threats.
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE ARE THE MOST PRESSING CHALLENGES IN THE FIELD OF CYBERSECURITY TODAY?
The most pressing challenges in cybersecurity today include rapidly evolving threats and the increasing sophistication of cyberattacks. Attackers are using advanced techniques like AI-driven malware and ransomware, making traditional defenses less effective. Another major challenge is the shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals, which hampers organizations’ ability to respond to threats effectively.
AS A PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND COMPUTING AT CHANDIGARH GROUP OF COLLEGES, LANDRAN, WHAT TRENDS IN CYBERSECURITY DO YOU THINK WILL BE MOST IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS TO FOCUS ON IN THE COMING YEARS.
As per my experience, In the coming years, students should focus on trends like artificial intelligence and machine learning in cybersecurity, as these technologies are transforming threat detection and response. Understanding AI-driven attacks and developing skills to counter them will be crucial. Cloud security is also essential, given the widespread adoption of cloud services, with an emphasis on securing data and applications in hybrid environments.
CYBERSECURITY HAS BECOME A GLOBAL ISSUE. IN YOUR OPINION, HOW CAN COUNTRIES COLLABORATE MORE EFFECTIVELY TO COMBAT CYBERCRIME AND ENSURE GLOBAL CYBER RESILIENCE?
Countries can enhance their collaboration in combating cybercrime and ensuring global cyber resilience through several strategic initiatives. First, establishing and strengthening international agreements, such as the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, can create a unified legal framework for cooperation. Additionally, improving mechanisms for sharing threat intelligence and best practices is crucial; centralized platforms for governments and the private sector to exchange information on emerging threats can foster proactive measures. Joint training programs and simulation exercises can enhance capacity and preparedness, enabling nations to respond more effectively during cyber incidents. Encouraging public-private partnerships will lead to more robust cybersecurity solutions, leveraging resources and expertise across sectors. Wealthier nations can also play a vital role by providing training and technical support to developing countries, promoting a balanced global approach to cybersecurity.
WITH CYBERATTACKS BECOMING MORE SOPHISTICATED, WHAT TECHNOLOGIES OR APPROACHES DO YOU THINK HOLD THE MOST PROMISE IN SAFEGUARDING DATA AND SYSTEMS WORLDWIDE?
As cyberattacks grow increasingly sophisticated, several technologies and approaches show promise in safeguarding data and systems worldwide. One of the most effective is artificial intelligence (AI), which can enhance threat detection and response by analyzing vast amounts of data to identify anomalies and potential breaches in real time. Machine learning algorithms can continuously improve their accuracy by learning from previous attacks. Another promising approach is the implementation of zero-trust architecture, which requires strict identity verification for every user, device, and application, regardless of their location. This minimizes the risk of unauthorized access. Additionally, advanced encryption technologies, such as quantum encryption, offer a robust method for protecting sensitive data from interception and tampering.

HOW DO YOU SEE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY EVOLVING, ESPECIALLY IN THE FIELD OF CYBERSECURITY?
The relationship between academia and industry in the field of cybersecurity is evolving into a more dynamic and collaborative partnership. As cyber threats become more sophisticated, both sectors recognize the need for mutual engagement to address pressing challenges. Academia brings cutting-edge research, theoretical frameworks, and a pipeline of skilled graduates, while industry offers practical insights and real-world problems that require innovative solutions. Collaborative initiatives, such as joint research projects, internships, and co-op programs, are increasingly common, enabling students to gain hands-on experience and companies to tap into fresh ideas and talent. Furthermore, industry-sponsored research at universities helps ensure that academic work is aligned with current trends and needs, leading to more relevant outcomes.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOURSELF UPDATED WITH THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS AND TRENDS IN THE RAPIDLY CHANGING FIELD OF CYBERSECURITY?
Keeping updated in the rapidly changing field of cybersecurity involves a multifaceted approach. First, I regularly follow reputable cybersecurity news websites and blogs, such as Krebs on Security and the Hacker News, to stay informed about the latest threats and trends. Subscribing to industry newsletters and podcasts provides insights from experts and thought leaders, helping me grasp emerging technologies and best practices. Additionally, I participate in online forums and communities, like Reddit and specialized LinkedIn groups, where professionals discuss current challenges and share resources. Attending conferences, webinars, and workshops is also vital; these events offer opportunities to learn from experts and network with peers. Engaging in continuous education through online courses and certifications helps deepen my understanding of specific areas within cybersecurity.
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ROLE DOES INNOVATION PLAY IN CYBERSECURITY EDUCATION, AND HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE IT IN YOUR STUDENTS?
Innovation plays a crucial role in cybersecurity education, as it enables students to adapt to an ever-evolving threat landscape. By fostering a culture of creativity and critical thinking, educators can prepare students to devise novel solutions to complex security challenges. To encourage innovation, I incorporate hands-on projects and real-world scenarios into the curriculum, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. This experiential learning approach stimulates problem-solving skills and inspires students to explore new technologies and methodologies.
I also promote collaboration through group projects and hackathons, where students can brainstorm and test their ideas in a supportive environment. Inviting guest speakers from the industry to share their experiences and insights can spark interest and expose students to current trends and technologies. Additionally, encouraging research initiatives allows students to delve into emerging topics and contribute original ideas to the field.
WHAT TIPS CAN YOU OFFER TO STUDENTS ON BALANCING THEIR ACADEMIC AND PERSONAL LIVES WHILE PURSUING A DEMANDING FIELD LIKE CYBERSECURITY?
Balancing academic and personal life while pursuing a demanding field like cybersecurity requires effective time management and self-care strategies. First, students should prioritize their tasks by using a planner or digital calendar to organize deadlines and study sessions. Setting realistic, achievable goals can help break larger projects into manageable tasks, preventing feelings of overwhelm. Establishing a consistent daily routine is also essential, as it helps structure time for studying, attending classes, and engaging in personal activities. Incorporating self-care is equally important; dedicating time for physical activity, hobbies, and relaxation recharges the mind and reduces stress. By implementing these strategies, students can effectively navigate the demands of cybersecurity education while ensuring they maintain a healthy and balanced life.
