Honda Appoints Toshiyuki Yanagisawa as New President & CEO of Honda Cars India

Honda Motor Co. is making a major change in the leadership of its passenger vehicle operations in India by naming Toshiyuki Yanagisawa as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL). He will begin in this role on October 1, 2026, after Takashi Nakajima returns to the regional headquarters of Asian Honda Motor Co. Ltd. once he has finished his term in India.

Yanagisawa is now an Operating Executive at Honda Motor Co. and in this capacity he leads the India Strategic Development Office. He also acts as Chief Executive Officer of Honda Digital Innovation India Pvt. Ltd. (HDII) and will keep taking charge of the digital division in addition to his new duties at Honda Cars India.

This appointment occurs since Honda is placing increasing emphasis on the Indian market, the company viewing it as one of its three most important global regions together with Japan and North America. The automaker is now getting ready for the next stage of its long-term strategy in the country, which involves the development of a new vehicle aimed at the Indian market that is expected to be launched in 2028.

Yanagisawa is well acquainted with India’s automotive sector since previously while on international assignments he worked for Honda Cars India; as a result he has acquired useful experience and a good understanding of local customer preferences, the state of the market and the competitive situation, and this knowledge is likely to contribute to a smooth leadership change.

Honda thinks that by having a single executive in charge of both its passenger vehicle business and its digital innovation operations it will be able to improve its capacity to bring out products which are not only appropriate for Indian customers but also fitted with the most up-to-date connected technologies and digital services.

Takashi Nakajima, who was outgoing CEO, was instrumental in increasing Honda’s position in India during his time in office. He expanded the company’s SUV range by introducing models such as the Honda Elevate and at the same time laid the groundwork for future product development and long-term growth programmes.

Honda is expected to keep making investments in local product development, digital transformation and sustainable mobility solutions under Yanagisawa’s leadership as it strives to reinforce its position in one of the fastest-growing automobile markets in the world.

Additional Insight

Global car manufacturers have found India to be an ever more important market thanks to rising demand for SUVs, hybrid vehicles, and connected-car technology. Instead of just modifying their global models, the automakers are now investing more in developing products specific to India.

Honda has also been gradually expanding its digital ecosystem in India, with a focus on connected services, software integration and the customer experience. This indicates that the company’s future strategy will go beyond manufacturing to involve smart mobility solutions and technology-based ownership experiences.
