American golfer Cameron Young has finally won his first PGA Tour title at the Wyndham Championship, after finishing second seven times in the past. He played a steady final round with a score of 2-under 68, finishing the tournament at 22-under 258, tying the tournament record.
Young, 28, took control early with five birdies in a row and built a strong lead. Even though he made two bogeys toward the end, he still won by six shots over Mac Meissner, who finished second at 16-under.
“I’ve been waiting for this for a while,” said an emotional Young. “It’s the end of my fourth season, and I wasn’t going to let it slip away today.”
With this win, Young becomes the 1,000th player in history to win a recognized PGA Tour event. He now hopes this victory will help him earn a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
This win is even more special because it happened at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina, where Young once played college golf at Wake Forest University.
Other highlights from the final round:
- Jackson Koivun, an amateur from Auburn University, tied for fifth, which qualifies him for a future PGA event.
- Chris Kirk moved into the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings, which means he qualifies for the playoffs starting next week.
- Davis Thompson missed the top 70 by just five points, after a three-putt on the final hole.
- Matti Schmid of Germany held on to the 70th spot with a strong finish, including three birdies on the last three holes.
After years of waiting and many close calls, Cameron Young now has his long-awaited trophy, and possibly, a big future ahead.
