India’s aviation sector has welcomed a new name, but what has captured public attention is not just the airline’s launch. It is the extraordinary story of the man behind it. The chairman of Shankh Airlines, Shravan Kumar Vishwakarma, has travelled an extraordinary path that reflects grit, patience, and a belief that ambition should not be limited by background.

Shankh Airlines is expected to begin operations in the first half of January 2026, starting with a modest fleet of three Airbus aircraft. In its initial phase, the airline will operate flights between Lucknow and major metro cities such as Delhi and Mumbai, as well as several destinations within Uttar Pradesh. Two more aircraft are expected to join the fleet in the next one-and-a-half months, marking the start of a gradual expansion.

What makes this launch compelling is Vishwakarma’s personal journey. From a modest middle-class family in Uttar Pradesh, he once drove a tempo to earn a living. His formal education was limited, and academics were not his strong suit. Like many young Indians, he tried multiple small businesses; some worked briefly, many failed. Yet, instead of giving up, he kept moving forward.

His turning point came in 2014, when he entered the cement trade. From there, his ventures expanded into the TMT steel, mining, and transportation sectors. Over time, these businesses grew steadily, without dramatic growth spurts or marked external funding. Today, his transport business alone operates a fleet of more than 400 trucks.

The idea of launching an airline first occurred to him about four years ago. Instead of rushing in, Vishwakarma took time to understand aviation regulations, securing approvals, and the operational realities of the sector. That idea has now become Shankh Airlines, backed by its parent company, with aircraft acquired through leasing and external financing.

At its core, the airline aims to make flying more accessible to middle-class passengers and first-time flyers. Vishwakarma believes air travel should not be viewed as a luxury but as another mode of transport. Reflecting this philosophy, the airline does not plan to raise ticket prices during festival seasons, although business-class fares will remain at a premium.

Beyond connectivity, Shankh Airlines is expected to generate employment opportunities for young people, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. Vishwakarma’s message to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: stop worrying about public opinion. His own journey from driving a tempo to leading an airline proves that mindset, not background, defines how far one can go.
