The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET-UG), one of India’s most important medical entrance exams, is set to undergo a potential transformation. According to reports, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has indicated a shift from the traditional pen-and-paper format to an online, computer-based test (CBT).
This development follows recommendations made by a seven-member expert panel led by former ISRO Chief K. Radhakrishnan. Convened earlier this year, the panel was tasked with suggesting reforms to entrance examinations conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) following concerns over exam integrity and fairness.
The move towards CBT is seen as part of broader reforms to strengthen the reliability and transparency of entrance exams. Allegations of paper leaks and security breaches in exams like NEET UG 2024 and UGC NET have raised concerns, prompting the government to explore tamper-proof systems.
To address these issues, the expert panel consulted students, parents, and stakeholders to understand their challenges and gather feedback. In June, K. Radhakrishnan emphasized the importance of creating a robust examination framework that safeguards the integrity of such high-stakes tests.
Transitioning NEET UG to a computer-based format offers several advantages:
- Enhanced Security: Digital exams reduce the risk of paper leaks and manipulation.
- Faster Processing: Results can be compiled more quickly due to automated scoring systems.
- Flexibility: Multiple exam sessions can be conducted to accommodate a larger number of candidates.
However, challenges remain, including:
- Digital Divide: Ensuring equitable access to technology for candidates from rural or underprivileged backgrounds.
- Technical Glitches: Maintaining robust systems to prevent disruptions during the test.
- Familiarity with Format: Training students and institutions to adapt to the CBT approach.
In addition to fully online exams, the panel has proposed hybrid models where question papers are transmitted digitally, but candidates respond to paper. Another suggestion includes conducting medical entrance exams in multiple stages to reduce stress and enhance evaluation accuracy.
Minister Pradhan stated that the implementation process for the panel’s recommendations has already begun. While no formal announcement has been made regarding NEET UG 2024, reports suggest that the move to a computer-based format is imminent. The government reportedly draws inspiration from the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Mains), which successfully transitioned to a CBT model years ago.
While challenges must be addressed to ensure a smooth transition, the move reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing fairness and efficiency in competitive exams.
