The truth is that technology is amazing… until the moment it isn’t. One minute you’re doing fine, all your devices are working, the wifi is on and strong, and then, just like that, something happens such as a power surge, a system crash, a forgotten password, and so on, and suddenly your day is in complete chaos. These are the moments when you realize just how crucial it is to have a backup plan for when technology goes wrong.

You can think of your backup plan as insurance – you’ll hopefully never need to use it, but it makes a lot of sense to have it just in case. With that in mind, here are some of the reasons why it’s smart to have a backup plan in today’s digital world.

It Will Protect Your Data

First and foremost, you need to think about your data, which means your photos, documents, and any other personal info (your life, in other words!). This will generally sit in a cloud account (and if it doesn’t, it should), but what if you were to lose years of memories or your big work project because of a single tech glitch? Backup plans, like setting up an external hard drive or automatically syncing to a secure cloud storage can mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and a full-blown digital disaster.

When tech goes wrong, as JD Barker has written about recently showing how easily it could happen, it’s your backup plan that will be there to save the day, so make sure it’s there and don’t put all your trust in one system.

It Will Keep You Calm

Tech failures can lead to a lot of stress in life, like almost nothing else can – that’s because we rely on tech so much that when it’s not available, it’s devastating and we just can’t do anything. Remember, we rely on tech for work, communication, and even entertainment, and a sudden outage can throw us off completely – it’s a terrible feeling. Having a backup plan in place, like knowing which files are stored where or having an alternate wifi option can keep you calm and level-headed in any situation.

Imagine having that great sense of calm every time tech fails you in some way – your mental health will improve and you’ll still get everything ticked off your to-do list, so you won’t fall behind and you won’t lose anything precious.

It Will Save You Time

Recovering from a tech failure is exhausting and time-consuming – just think of the hours you’ll spend recovering passwords, redoing projects, and getting customer support on the line to help you put things back as they were (if that’s even possible).

Having a solid backup plan in place can save you from all this and save you all the time you’d be wasting doing it as well, which is so precious these days. Regularly saving your work, knowing who to go to for IT problems before they become too big to handle, and backing up critical data in more than one place means you’ll be able to get everything back on track much more quickly.
