BMW’s supervisory board has appointed longtime executive Milan Nedeljković as the automaker’s next Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership transition as the German luxury carmaker enters one of the most challenging periods in its recent history. Nedeljković will step into the role on May 14, 2026, succeeding outgoing CEO Oliver Zipse, who will leave BMW after 35 years.

The leadership change comes at a critical moment: BMW is preparing to launch its all-electric Neue Klasse lineup in 2026, while grappling with intense competition from Chinese automakers, high U.S. tariffs, and a slowing global auto market. These pressures prompted BMW to cut its 2025 earnings forecast in October, underscoring the urgency of a steady and experienced hand at the helm.

Who is Milan Nedeljković?

Nedeljković, 56, is a seasoned insider with more than three decades of experience at BMW. Born in Serbia, he studied mechanical engineering in Germany and at MIT before joining BMW in 1993 as a trainee.

Over the years, he has held several pivotal roles across the company’s global operations. His career spans:

  • Leading the paint shop at BMW’s Oxford MINI plant
  • Serving as Managing Director of the Munich plant
  • Overseeing production across all BMW facilities worldwide

In 2019, he joined BMW’s management board as head of global production, guiding the company’s manufacturing strategy as it transitioned to electric mobility. His contract as CEO will run through 2031.

BMW’s supervisory board chair, Nicolas Peter, praised Nedeljković’s leadership approach, noting that he “unites people and motivates them to achieve peak performance,” a crucial quality as the company adapts to rapid industry shifts. Analysts echoed the sentiment, with Metzler’s Pal Skirta noting that Nedeljković’s broad operational experience positions him well to navigate the challenges ahead.

What Happens to Oliver Zipse?

Outgoing CEO Oliver Zipse, 61, will depart BMW in May 2026 after leading the company through transformative and turbulent years, including the global pandemic and the early stages of BMW’s electrification strategy. His mandate was extended beyond the typical retirement age, allowing him to oversee the development of the Neue Klasse platform.

Zipse is expected to join the Airbus board of directors following his departure, according to earlier announcements. Chair Nicolas Peter credited Zipse for guiding BMW through crises and being “the driving force behind the Neue Klasse.”
