Starbucks has announced a major leadership change, appointing Brian Niccol as its new CEO. Niccol, who previously led Chipotle Mexican Grill, is set to receive a substantial compensation package as he takes the helm at Starbucks.
Under the new agreement, Niccol will receive $23 million in annual equity awards, a significant boost to his total earnings. Additionally, Starbucks will grant Niccol $75 million in stock options to compensate for his Chipotle shares, which he will relinquish as part of his transition. His initial annual base salary is set at $1.6 million, and he will also receive a $10 million cash signing bonus.
Niccol’s track record at Chipotle is impressive. Since taking over as CEO in March 2018, he played a crucial role in revitalizing the restaurant chain’s reputation following a series of food safety scandals. His tenure also saw significant advancements in Chipotle’s digital and mobile ordering systems, which helped streamline operations and improve customer experience. During his leadership, Chipotle doubled its sales over five years and saw its stock value triple.
Starbucks is hopeful that Niccol’s expertise will help turn around the company’s fortunes. His appointment comes after Laxman Narasimhan’s resignation on August 13. Narasimhan’s brief stint at Starbucks, which began in March 2023, was marked by increasing pressure from activist investors and challenges in the U.S. and Chinese markets. Starbucks shares dropped nearly 25% under his leadership.
Narasimhan’s total compensation last year was $14.6 million, up from $8.8 million in 2022. In comparison, Niccol’s compensation at Chipotle was $22.5 million for 2023, reflecting his successful leadership and the company’s strong performance.
As Starbucks welcomes Niccol, the company is betting on his proven ability to drive growth and innovation to address its current challenges and enhance its market position.
