Speaking with Darrell Franklin Lovett: A writer who cares about shaping the next generation

HELLO DARRELL FRANKLIN LOVETT, WELCOME TO ABOUT INSIDER! WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST ABOUT WRITING FOR KIDS?
What inspires me about writing for young people is the fact that if a child is taught morals and values at a young age they will usually keep on a good path through out life.  The thing that gets in the way are kids that are not shown what living right will do for you in your future.  So I love to teach children of all ages life lessons that come along with growing up, and hopefully capture the attention of all kids, even the ones that do not have a mentor around to teach them life lessons.

DO YOU THINK A BOOK CAN LEAVE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON A YOUNG MIND?
Yes a young mind is very impressionable, they will pic up on good and bad things.  So if the good things are instilled in them from someone they respect or a mentor they respect, they will bring those with them as they grow up, and eventually pass the lesson on to their own children.  That’s where I come in with my books.  I always write about life lessons, and the reward of living right.  You have to explain the reason behind living right, you can’t just tell them not to do something, explain the pros and cons of every action they make.

HOW DID YOUR OWN CHILDHOOD INFLUENCE THE MESSAGE YOU’VE PRESENTED HERE?
I came from a very close and loving family.  My mother and father instilled morals and values in my siblings and I with very passionate and caring sort of way.  They always had reasons why not to do something, but also had visible and verbal reasons why us children should do things a certain way. They made it very easy to see the rewards and reactions to our actions.

WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERY CHILD TAKES AWAY?
I want to make sure every child takes away happy and explained reactions to their actions growing up, pour or rich.

DID YOU RUN YOUR IDEAS PAST ANY BUDDING YOUNG READERS AND WRITERS?
When I write a story, I always run it past the 6 year olds up to the 15 year olds in my family.  We have a lot of young children in my family, so having an audience is very easy. They are usually always willing to listen to a great but funny story.  Especially a story that teaches them something and gets their young minds working, with some humor besides.

IF THERE’S ONE SCHOOL GRADE WHO NEED THIS BOOK THE MOST, WHICH IS IT?
I think the most Impressionable kids in the 8th and 9th grade will benefit from this book.  It would be funny to any kid, but the lesson will come out in the kids that are approaching a journey through high school. They will catch the bad reaction from the bad action the young girl does in this book, Patsy Pixel.

THIS IS YOUR FOURTH BOOK FOR KIDS, CAN WE EXPECT A QUINTET?
Yes I have a fifth Children’s book already for illustrations, and publishing. It’s for 6 – 12 year olds. It is also funny but has a very strong learning lesson for children of all ages.

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DID ONCE YOU FINISHED THE BOOK?
I sent a free copy to all the libraries in my area, and to radio stations, and tv stations,  also to the schools around me for their library.  Then I set up book signings where possible.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS FROM, AND WHAT DO THEY MEAN TO YOU?
I will think of a life lesson that came to me as I was growing up, but a lot of times, life lessons come to me as an adult even to this day. It’s a good verses evil thing to me. I write a battle out that starts good, has the bad , and ends up good. I love to show the rewards of good hard work, and the rewards of living right.

HOW DID THE IDEA FOR PATSY COME INTO YOUR HEAD?
Patsy came into my head when I realized as a child I did not always listen to my very loving parents, and hung out with bad kids with no home training as we use to say.   I remember my momma warning me what would happen as an adult if I didn’t hang out with good people while I was young and growing up. So I made me into Patsy, and got her into lots of trouble to show the reactions to her actions.
