The ninth season of Bigg Boss Telugu kicked off with its usual mix of glamour, controversy, and drama. Among the 11 contestants who entered the house this year, one name has stood out – Flora Saini. Known for her memorable role in Stree and now part of Stree 2, Flora is not only an actress with an impressive filmography but also a woman who has bravely spoken about her survival story as a domestic violence victim.
Her Journey in Cinema
Flora Saini, also known by her stage name Asha Saini, entered the film industry in 1999 with the Telugu film Prema Kosam. Interestingly, her name was changed to Asha Saini by filmmakers who believed it would bring her luck, without even consulting her. While her debut didn’t make much noise, she soon rose to recognition with EVV Satyanarayana’s Chal Bagundi.
Throughout the 2000s, Flora established herself as a popular face in Telugu cinema. She acted alongside big stars in films like Prematho Raa, Narasimha Naidu, and Nuvvu Naku Nachav. Over the years, she built a diverse career spanning nearly 150 films in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi. She also appeared in Bollywood movies such as Dabangg 2, Love in Nepal, Lakshmi, and Dhanak. However, her most famous role came in 2018 with Stree, where she played a ghost, a performance that won her national recognition.
Surviving Domestic Violence
Behind the success and glamour, Flora’s personal life was far from easy. At the age of 20, she entered into a relationship with Bollywood producer Gaurang Doshi. What began as a seemingly loving relationship soon turned violent and controlling.
According to Flora, she was cut off from her family, had her phone taken away, and was pressured to quit work. She recalled how physical abuse became a daily reality. In one shocking incident, Doshi allegedly threatened her life, saying, “I swear on my father, I will kill you tonight.” That night, Flora ran for her life, remembering her mother’s words: “Don’t think of clothes or money – just run.”
The following day, she went to the police station with her family to file a complaint. However, the police initially refused to take her statement and even seemed to be in touch with her abuser. Flora persisted and eventually managed to file a handwritten complaint.
What makes Flora’s story even more striking is the irony surrounding her abuser’s professional life. Gaurang Doshi, the son of veteran producer Vinodrai Amarchand Doshi, is known for making socially relevant films like Bawandar, which dealt with women’s struggles. Yet, in his personal life, he has been accused of violence against a woman he once loved.
Finding Her Voice
Although the abuse took place in 2007, Flora stayed silent for more than a decade. It was during the #MeToo movement in 2018, shortly after the release of Stree, that she finally shared her story with the world. By then, she had rebuilt her career and found the strength to talk about the darkest phase of her life. In later interviews, she even compared her ordeal to the tragic case of Shraddha Walkar, whose life was cut short in 2022 by her partner.
Flora’s willingness to speak out has made her a voice for women who are silenced by fear, stigma, or lack of support.
Why Bigg Boss Matters
Over the years, Bigg Boss Telugu has gained a reputation for casting participants who bring not just entertainment, but also real-life stories filled with drama, resilience, or scandal. From Mumaith Khan’s involvement in the Tollywood drug case in Season 1 to Shekhar Basha’s leaked audio scandal in Season 8, the show thrives on contestants with complex pasts.
Flora’s entry into Bigg Boss Telugu 9 marks another such moment. But unlike others, she isn’t entering the house simply as a controversial figure – she is stepping in as a survivor with a story to tell. Her journey of resilience and courage is now being shared with a much larger audience, making her both a contestant and an inspiration.
